Houston, Texas, USA:An investigation is underway by the FAA following a potentially catastrophic incident involving a United Airlines flight. Safety concerns in air travel have been magnified after two fatal crashes earlier this year.
On Sunday morning, passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 1382 had to quickly evacuate via emergency slides and stairs after a fire and smoke erupted from the aircraft’s right engine during takeoff at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The flight, bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport, had to halt on the runway around 8:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The agency confirmed that all 104 passengers and five crew members safely exited the plane and were transported back to the terminal by bus.
According to the FAA, “The takeoff was aborted after the Airbus A319 displayed an engine-related warning,” as mentioned in a statement cited by AP.
A video aired by KPRC-TV revealed flames and smoke billowing from the wing as the aircraft rushed down the runway. In the footage, a passenger can be heard desperately urging, “Please, please, get us out of here.”
United Airlines confirmed that passengers evacuated using “a combination of slides and stairs,” and arrangements were made for a replacement aircraft to take them to New York at 2:00 p.m. CT.
The FAA has initiated an inquiry into the event. The incident has raised further concerns over the safety of air travel following two deadly crashes earlier this year.
The Houston Fire Department (HFD) tweeted about their role: “HFD’s Airport Rescue Firefighters are assisting at @iah after a departing plane reported an issue on the runway. HFD assisted in deboarding the plane. No injuries have been reported at this time.”
Meanwhile, in Washington, DC, a midair collision between an American Airlines jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and an Army helicopter resulted in all onboard fatalities. Additionally, a small jet crash in a Philadelphia neighborhood claimed seven lives.
