Bahri Floods Reveal Landmines: Urgent Warnings for Residents

Sudan, Khartoum: Recent heavy rains in northern Bahri have exposed landmines previously buried in the fields along the road to the Nile River State. The Bahri Emergency Room has urgently warned residents about the danger of these newly uncovered mines and advised them to avoid drainage channels and suspected mined areas to ensure their safety.

Khalid Hamdan, former director of the National Mine Action Center, emphasized the severe threat these landmines pose to both humans and animals, particularly in areas where mines are planted on roads and in populated zones. Major General Moatasim Abdelgadir accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of laying these mines, citing their control over the affected areas as evidence. He also criticized the Sudanese army for planting mines around military garrisons, highlighting the risk of civilian casualties, especially among children.

Kamal Karrar of the Central Committee of the Sudanese Communist Party stressed the lethal impact of landmines on civilians, noting their tendency to cause fatalities and amputations. He reminded that Sudan has ratified a UN convention banning these weapons, but both warring parties continue to use mines, endangering civilian lives.
