Indian-American Voters Rising Influence in the 2024 US Election Swing States

Indian-American voters, a growing demographic with high voter turnout, are becoming crucial in the 2024 US presidential election. Their increasing numbers and potential shift from Democrats to Republicans make them significant in key swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—where the race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris is tight. In these states, where only tens of thousands of votes can influence the outcome, Indian-American voters hold substantial sway for both major parties.

Indian-American voters are gaining significant attention in the 2024 US elections due to their growing population and political influence. With approximately 5.2 million people of Indian origin in the US, 3.9 million are adults, and around 2.6 million are eligible voters. This group has grown by 50% between 2010 and 2020, making it the second-largest immigrant community in the country. According to a report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 96% of registered Indian-American voters are expected to vote.

Indian-American voters are particularly important in swing states. In seven key battleground states, over 400,000 Asian Americans, including Indian Americans, have become eligible voters in recent years. Indian Americans are the largest Asian group in Georgia (177,310), followed by Pennsylvania (166,355) and Michigan (129,025). Their votes could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the presidential race. The Hindu and Indian American community's impact in these states is highlighted as a key factor in the tight race, potentially deciding the next president of the US.

Indian-Americans, traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party, are showing signs of shifting political allegiance. A 2024 IAAS survey reveals that only 47% now identify as Democrats, a decline from 56% in 2020. This trend is particularly noticeable among younger voters and men. Support for Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate of Indian descent, has also decreased, with 61% expressing intent to vote for her, down 7 percentage points from Joe Biden's support in 2020. As Indian-American voters become more politically mobilized, they are expected to have a significant impact on the 2024 elections.
