Virginia Senate Honors Indian-American Journalist Vishnudatta Jayaraman

Richmond, Virginia, USA: The Virginia State Senate has honored Indian-American journalist Vishnudatta Jayaraman for his contributions to journalism and for founding the South Asian Herald, a news platform that highlights diverse voices from the South Asian community across the Commonwealth.

The recognition came through Senate Resolution No. 156, introduced by Senator Kannan Srinivasan and presented on March 12. Jayaraman, who serves as the founder and editor-in-chief of the South Asian Herald, attended the Senate session from the gallery on March 9, where Senator Srinivasan summarized the resolution before the chamber.

According to the resolution, Jayaraman established the South Asian Herald in October 2024 with the objective of creating a reliable news platform dedicated to the Indian-American and broader South Asian community in the United States. The publication focuses on delivering timely and fact-based reporting on a wide range of topics, including local developments, community affairs, and global issues.

The resolution stated that the platform was launched with the mission of serving as an authentic voice for the South Asian diaspora in the United States.

Lawmakers also acknowledged Jayaraman’s broader journalistic contributions, noting that his work has helped highlight diverse perspectives, encourage informed discussions, and bring greater visibility to South Asian communities living in the Commonwealth.

Before launching the South Asian Herald, Jayaraman built an extensive career in journalism across India and the United States. He previously worked with leading publications such as Hindustan Times, The Times of India, The Tribune, and The Sunday Observer.

He also served as a contributing editor for the Yearbook of the United Nations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Most recently, he held the position of Washington Bureau Chief for the News India Times and Desi Talk publications.

Jayaraman is an accredited journalist and holds membership in several prominent media organizations, including the White House Correspondents’ Association, the National Press Club, the South Asian Journalists Association, and the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States.
