China Expresses Support for Kamala Harris in U.S. Presidential Race

Beijing, China: As the U.S. presidential elections draw near, China has revealed its preference for Vice President Kamala Harris to win. This sentiment stems from a desire to improve bilateral relations, according to a recent statement from China's National Advisory Committee.

Xia Qinggo, a member of the standing committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), indicated that he would not comment directly on the election but noted that the committee is inclined to support Harris. This stance follows a survey conducted among Chinese citizens regarding their views on the U.S. election. The relationship between China and the U.S. significantly deteriorated during Donald Trump’s presidency.

"During the Trump administration, relations between the two countries worsened, leading to serious conflicts. False allegations were made against China, and we continue to have differences with the Biden administration as well. The repercussions of decisions made during Trump’s tenure are still felt today. However, under Biden, U.S. policy toward China has remained relatively stable, with ongoing discussions between the leaders to address these issues," Xia Qinggo stated.

Chinese citizens’ opinions on Trump and Harris differ greatly. Some hope for a Harris victory, with one remarking, "I've already had a bitter experience with Trump. I don't want that situation again." Trump has accused China of being the source of the coronavirus pandemic, claims that China has denied. He also imposed significant tariffs on Chinese imports, a policy that the Biden administration has continued. The prospect of Trump regaining power raises concerns in China, especially regarding his threats to impose further tariffs. In light of this, Kamala Harris is viewed as a more favorable candidate.
