Rhode Island Man Shot by Vermont Troopers After Firing at Them

A Rhode Island man, identified as Brenden Sackal, remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following an incident with Vermont State Police in Burke. According to reports, Sackal fired at troopers during his arrest after a vehicle chase on Sunday night.

Authorities had been alerted by Rhode Island police about Sackal's presence in northern New Hampshire and Vermont, where he was wanted for possessing illegal high-capacity firearm magazines. Spotting his pickup truck in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, U.S. Border Patrol attempted a stop, but Sackal fled, leading agents into Canaan, Vermont. With tire deflation devices deployed, Sackal continued southbound until colliding with Vermont State Police cruisers in Morgan. Subsequently, during his apprehension in Burke, Sackal discharged a weapon at troopers, prompting return fire that injured him.

Sackal received initial treatment at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital before being transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Vermont State Police confirmed that no troopers were injured in the incident. Pending charges against Sackal are under review as the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit investigates the use of force during the arrest.
