Washington, D.C., USA: The United States House of Representatives has approved a short-term funding measure for the Department of Homeland Security, escalating an ongoing political standoff that has kept parts of the agency partially shut down for weeks.
The Republican-led chamber passed the stopgap bill to extend DHS funding through May, with the objective of restoring essential operations. The shutdown began in mid-February after lawmakers failed to reach consensus on immigration enforcement policies and federal spending priorities.
At the center of the dispute is a significant divide between the House and the United States Senate. The Senate had earlier cleared a bipartisan proposal that funded most DHS functions but excluded agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Protection. House Republicans rejected this approach, instead pushing for comprehensive funding that includes enforcement agencies.
The bill narrowly passed along party lines in the House and is expected to encounter strong opposition in the Senate, leaving the future of DHS funding uncertain.
Several Indian-American Democratic lawmakers have voiced strong criticism of the measure, citing concerns about immigration enforcement practices, worker welfare, and the prolonged political stalemate.
Pramila Jayapal stated on X that the legislation fails to address longstanding issues related to DHS accountability and immigration reforms. She reiterated her stance against approving funding without significant policy changes.
Suhas Subramanyam also highlighted the impact of the shutdown on federal workers, urging lawmakers to pursue a bipartisan solution that ensures both operational funding and accountability.
Meanwhile, Raja Krishnamoorthi criticized the bill as insufficient, warning against deepening partisan divisions. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that addresses both national security requirements and oversight concerns.
The shutdown has had far-reaching consequences across the United States. Several federal employees, including those from the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the United States Coast Guard, have been working without pay. This has contributed to staff shortages and disruptions at major airports.
In addition, key services such as immigration processing and cybersecurity operations have been affected, highlighting the critical role DHS plays in maintaining national security and supporting essential public services.
