Former Arkansas Lawmaker Joyce Elliott Suffers Stroke, Undergoes Surgery, Family Reports

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Joyce Elliott, a former Arkansas state legislator who twice ran for Congress, recently underwent surgery following a stroke, according to her family.

Elliott, 73, suffered the stroke while in Dallas, Texas, earlier this week and has since been transferred to Little Rock, her family stated.

"She underwent successful surgery, though doctors have yet to determine her long-term prognosis," the statement read. "Rehabilitation is expected to commence as soon as she is able."

Elliott served in the state House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007 and later in the state Senate from 2009 until 2023. While she secured the Democratic Party's nomination for the 2nd Congressional District, encompassing the Little Rock area, she ultimately lost in the general elections to Republican Tim Griffin.

In 2020, Elliott pursued the seat again as the Democratic nominee but faced defeat to Republican Rep. French Hill. Elliott currently serves as the executive director of Get Loud Arkansas, an organization focused on voter registration and mobilization.

"Her selfless contributions have enriched our community," remarked Grant Tennille, Chairman of the state Democratic Party. "Today, we stand united in support, offering prayers for her recovery and respecting her privacy."
