North Carolina Senator Jim Perry Resigns, Forgoes Re election Bid

Jim Perry, a prominent North Carolina state senator known for his leadership on the Senate Finance Committee, has tendered his resignation shortly after the conclusion of this year's legislative session. Perry, representing Beaufort, Craven, and Lenoir counties, submitted his resignation effective July 2, 2024, in a letter to the Senate Principal Clerk's Office.

Having already announced his decision not to seek re-election this fall, Perry bid farewell to his colleagues in a heartfelt address last week. Appointed to the Senate in 2019, replacing the retiring Louis Pate, Perry reflected on his tenure, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the state.

In December, Perry disclosed his intention not to pursue another term, citing personal commitments requiring more time and attention. Republican activists in Perry's district will nominate a replacement to serve until year-end, with Democratic Governor Roy Cooper set to formalize the appointment, as mandated by state law.

The upcoming election for Perry's successor in what will be rebranded as the 3rd District already sees Republican Bob Brinson and Democrat Charles Dudley as contenders in the predominantly GOP stronghold.
