Hotel Collapse in Germany: 1 Fatality, 8 Trapped Near Moselle River

Germany, Frankfurt: A hotel near the banks of Germany’s river Moselle partially collapsed overnight, resulting in one death and eight others trapped, some with severe injuries, local police reported today.

Although the deceased has been located, recovery efforts have not yet been successful, according to the police. They have managed to make contact with some of the trapped individuals.

"This is an extremely challenging operation due to the extent of the damage," stated the police, noting that emergency responders can only enter the building in Kroev with the highest level of caution.

Images shared by local broadcaster SWR depicted the building's gable roof slanted backward and sections of the ground floor crushed.

Investigators believe 14 people were in the building when the upper floor collapsed around 11 pm (2100 GMT) yesterday. Five of these individuals were able to escape unharmed.

Additionally, 31 neighbors have been evacuated from nearby homes as a safety precaution, police said.

The Moselle region is well-known for attracting tourists with its picturesque towns and vineyards on steep riverbanks.
