Indian Woman Missing After Falling into Kuala Lumpur Sinkhole

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur: Vijaya Lakshmi Gali from Andhra Pradesh was on holiday in Malaysia when she fell into a 26-foot-deep sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur on August 23. She has been missing since the incident.

Her family, including her husband, son, and sister, visited the sinkhole location on Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur to conduct final rites on September 1. They performed Hindu rituals at the site, lighting oil lamps and ringing bells, and collected a sample of soil, which they placed in a plastic bag to take back to India. The family returned to India later that day at 5 p.m.

Despite extensive search efforts involving sniffer dogs and scuba units, rescuers were unable to locate her body. On August 31, Zaliha Mustafa, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories, announced the suspension of the search and rescue operation after nine days due to safety concerns for both the rescue team and the public. The government is considering compensation for the victim's family, with discussions scheduled for a Cabinet meeting on September 4.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reassured tourists on August 30 that Kuala Lumpur remains a safe destination despite the incident.
