Truck Driver Accused of Bribing Grand Forks Police Officer

An Alabama woman arrested for DUI now faces an additional charge of bribery after allegedly offering to pay a Grand Forks Police officer to release her.

Court records indicate that 34-year-old Demetria Clayton from Birmingham, Alabama, was apprehended by the officer following a report of a possible drunk driver in downtown Grand Forks.

The officer noted the smell of alcohol on Clayton, who admitted to drinking, exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes, and failed a field sobriety test.

After her arrest, Clayton requested a private conversation with the officer. During this exchange, she allegedly asked if he was open to negotiation.

When the officer inquired if Clayton was proposing money for her release, she initially offered $1,000. The officer sought clarification, asking if she was indeed offering money to avoid arrest, to which she confirmed, “Yeah.”

Upon refusing her initial offer, Clayton then raised the amount to $3,000.

Clayton expressed her desire to avoid losing her license and having the arrest on her record, stating, “I can drive and make that back, and you have $3,000 in your pocket.”

The officer reiterated that he could not accept the bribe and then requested that Clayton take a breathalyser test, which she refused.

Clayton now faces charges of DUI, refusal to take a DUI test, and bribery.
