Indian-American Democrats Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh Win Key Virginia Special Elections

Virginia, USA: Indian-American Democrats Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh emerged victorious in Virginia’s legislative special elections, with Srinivasan securing the Senate District 32 seat and Singh winning House District 26. These wins help maintain the Democratic majority in both chambers of Virginia's legislature, protecting the state from what the party views as the "extremism of Donald Trump and Glenn Youngkin."

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) celebrated the victories, emphasizing their importance in preserving policies like Roe v. Wade, voting rights, and marriage equality. Virginia Democratic Party Chair, Susan Swecker, praised the results as a rejection of Republican extremism.

Srinivasan, a former delegate and the first Indian immigrant elected to Virginia’s House of Delegates expressed his gratitude and commitment to the 2025 Legislative Session. Singh, the first turbaned Sikh to serve in the Peace Corps and a former Obama administration official, also thanked his supporters, vowing to fight for his community in Richmond.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) highlighted the wins as vital in maintaining Virginia’s Democratic majorities, especially as Republicans gain control in Washington. The DLCC is preparing for Virginia’s November elections, where the entire House of Delegates will be up for re-election, aiming to strengthen Democratic power further.
