Cholera is ravaging the African country of Zambia. Thousands of people are affected by this disease. Hundreds of people are losing their lives. According to international media reports, 600 people have lost their lives since October last year. More than 15 thousand people are suffering from this bacterial infection. The prevalence of this disease in nine out of ten provinces of the country is a reflection of the abusive situation there. The government has set up temporary treatment centres at the stadiums. Mass vaccination started. Providing purified drinking water to the affected areas. As the situation worsens, the services of retired medical personnel are also being taken up. Heavy rains at this time are hampering medical services and safe water supply. The mortality rate for cholera is usually less than one per cent. But the situation is different in Zambia. That rate is disturbingly higher than four per cent.

India has offered a helping hand: India has offered a helping hand in this dire situation. Officials said that 3.5 tonnes of humanitarian aid including chlorine tablets, ORS packets and water purifiers have been sent to the country.
