Indian IT Companies Concerned About H-1B Visa Fee Hike

Many immigration experts express concern over the recent hike in US H-1B visa application fees, which Indian IT companies warn will pose significant challenges and financial strain. Despite the demand in India, these firms rely on sending highly skilled tech professionals to America to fill specialized roles lacking domestically.

However, certain visa categories, including the H-1B, have seen fee increases. For instance, the H-1B visa application fee has surged from Rs.38,000 (460 dollars) to Rs.64,000 (780 dollars), while the H-1B registration fee has spiked from Rs.829 (10 dollars) to Rs.17,000 (215 dollars). Similarly, the L-1 visa application fee has risen from Rs.38,000 (460 dollars) to Rs.1,10,000 (1,385 dollars).

The National Foundation for American Policy notes that H-1B visa holders will now need to pay an additional $33,000 for job applications or extensions, a sum payable each time they apply.

Jonathan Wasden, managing attorney at Wasden Law, believes India aims to deter IT professionals from working in America, challenging the fee increases in court.

Nasscom, representing the IT industry, voices concerns about the impact of increased fees on Indian companies, warning of repercussions on business amid a significant demand-supply gap. Nasscom VP Shivendra Singh asserts that the fee hike will also harm the American economy.

While some foresee a reduction in H-1B visa usage due to the fee hike, others argue that companies will continue to bear the costs to acquire necessary skills.
