Will Omar Abdullahs Leadership Bring Progress and Unity to JK?

India, Jammu and Kashmir: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Omar Abdullah on his swearing-in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and pledged the Centre's support for the region's progress. Abdullah's government includes five ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, representing a balance between Jammu and Kashmir's political representation.

In his inaugural remarks, Abdullah emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Jammu residents feel adequately represented, indicating the inclusion of a Deputy CM as a step towards achieving this goal. The new cabinet includes one woman, Sakina Itoo, and reflects efforts to involve both regions.

Despite a pre-poll alliance, the Congress party chose not to join Abdullah's government, with leaders stating they would participate once J&K's statehood is restored, a promise made by the Centre. Prominent Congress figures and other leaders from the INDIA bloc attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Abdullah took his oath at the Sheri-Kashmir International Conference Centre, which has historical significance following the abrogation of J&K's special status in 2019. Shortly after taking office, he met with administrative secretaries to address the disconnect between the government and the public over the past five years. He instructed the police to minimize public inconvenience during his travels and promote a people-friendly approach.

As part of his agenda, Abdullah is expected to visit Warwan valley, recently affected by a devastating fire, demonstrating his commitment to addressing the needs of the local population. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti hailed the day as auspicious, expressing hope that the new government would help heal the wounds of the J&K people.
