86 Indians Attacked or Killed Abroad in 2023: US, UK, and Canada Top the List

Data from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs highlights that 86 Indian nationals were victims of attacks or murders overseas in 2023.

The highest number of incidents were reported in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia, with 12 cases in the US and 10 each in the other three countries. However, specifics regarding arrests, convictions, or penalties in these cases remain unavailable, according to the Ministry.

Addressing a parliamentary question, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indians abroad.

He emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad is a top priority

He added that Indian Missions and Posts abroad actively monitor incidents involving Indian citizens and promptly engage with the relevant authorities in host countries to ensure investigations and justice.

On the subject of hate crimes targeting Indians and Hindus, the Ministry assured that concerns are consistently raised with host governments, even at the highest levels when needed.

Indian Missions provide consular support as required and maintain 24/7 helplines for assistance. “"The Government is fully vigilant regarding developments impacting Indians overseas and takes all required measures to safeguard their welfare and interests," Singh stressed

While the Ministry has not provided a detailed list of incidents, arrests, or convictions country-wise, it underscored the value of international collaboration and dialogue in addressing these challenges.
