Ottawa, Canada: The notorious "dunki route" from the Canadian border has long been a favored path for Indians attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. However, a recent warning from Donald Trump has prompted Canada to take action.
Following increased security at the U.S.-Mexico border, illegal crossings have decreased significantly. Trump, the U.S. President-elect, has warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address illegal immigration or face a 25% tariff on goods from Canada.
In response to this pressure, the Canadian government has unveiled a $900 million plan to bolster border security. This initiative will involve advanced measures such as drones, surveillance towers, and collaborative task forces to disrupt smuggling operations.
Official figures show a steady rise in illegal immigration into the U.S. In 2024, over 44,000 Indians attempted unauthorized entry, a sharp increase from 30,000 the previous year.
As expected, Trump continues to push for stronger immigration controls, and with Canada now taking steps to comply, the "dunki route" may soon be closed for good.
