Indian-American Dr. Darshana Patel Takes Oath as Californias 76th District Assemblymember, Committed to Community Development

California, USA: Dr. Darshana R. Patel, the newly sworn-in Assemblymember for California’s 76th District, is dedicated to fostering progress in her community. As the daughter of immigrants, she has long focused on key issues such as public safety, healthcare, education, reproductive rights, and homelessness.

Representing Escondido, San Marcos, parts of San Diego, and surrounding areas like Rancho Santa Fe and Harmony Grove, Dr. Patel brings her expertise and passion to the role. Having lost her mother at the age of 14, this personal tragedy inspired her to pursue a career in medical research. She earned a B.A. in Biochemistry from Occidental College and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from UC Irvine. Prior to her political career, she excelled in biotechnology and dedicated herself to community leadership.

In November 2024, Dr. Patel was elected to represent California's 76th District, which spans northern San Diego County. A former research scientist, school board president, and committed community advocate, she brings both knowledge and empathy to her new position.

"I am deeply honored to represent the 76th District," said Dr. Patel. "I am committed to serving its residents with integrity and working towards meaningful outcomes that benefit our communities."

In her new role, Dr. Patel aims to address critical issues, including enhancing public safety, expanding healthcare access, improving education funding, safeguarding reproductive rights, and addressing homelessness.

Her track record in public service includes leadership roles such as President of the Poway Unified School District Board and chair of the San Diego County School Boards Association. She has also served on the San Diego Police Department’s Captain’s Advisory Board and led local planning and community councils. Furthermore, as a member of the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, Dr. Patel advocated for policies that promote inclusion and opportunity.
