Indian Silk Sarees Exhibition at City College of New York Celebrates Cultural Diversity and Fashion

New York, USA: The "Splendor of Silk & Beyond" exhibition, hosted by the International Museum of the Saree, concluded on December 11, 2024, after a two-month run at City College of New York, which began on October 15.

The exhibit showcased an impressive array of sarees, including Banarasi and South Indian styles, as well as a special cancer awareness-wellness saree. The event was attended by a wide range of leaders from various sectors, including diplomacy, judiciary, professional communities, and designers. Notable attendees included members of GOPIO International, SACSS, Nataraja Arts, Vivarta Arts, Sri Swaminarayan Baps Temple, Mithila Center, Mala Desai School of Odissi Dance, Hearts of Change, Gracie Mansion Conservancy, City University of New York (CUNY) staff and alumni, as well as diaspora families and leaders from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Guyana, the Caribbean, Bangladesh, South Africa, Zambia, Pakistan, Europe, China, and Korea.

In addition to the saree collection, the exhibition also featured a variety of cultural garments, including sherwanis, kurtas, dhotis, lehengas, and kimonos, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Indian-South Asian, Caribbean, and Japanese communities.

A key highlight of the exhibition was the exclusive preview of IM of The Saree, Act 1, a short documentary film that featured messages from the founders of the International Museum of the Saree, along with contributions from renowned musicians like Pt. Anup Jalota and Ustad Kamal Sabri, as well as a teaser by Bollywood actor Rahul Roy.

The opening reception, held on November 12, included performances by distinguished musicians, such as Ustad Kamal Sabri and ensemble, Terry Gajraj, and Artiste Anjali, both of Guyanese descent. The event was organized by City College of New York, the Colin Powell School of Civic and Global Leadership, City College Alumni, as well as IM of The Saree and the Green Fashion, Art, and Design Museum.

This exhibition is part of the ongoing mission of the International Museum of the Saree to preserve and promote the development of arts, culture, and the diverse communities across the globe.
