Neeta Bhasin Becomes First Indian American Woman on New Yorks AAPI Commission

New York, USA: New York State launched its inaugural Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Commission on December 12 at Queens College, marking a historic step with the swearing-in of 13 members, including Neeta Bhasin, the first Indian American woman on the Commission.

Bhasin, a prominent entrepreneur and cultural advocate, is known for founding Diwali at Times Square and Sammaan for All. Her initiatives have significantly promoted South Asian culture in the U.S. She also established ASB Communications, the first South Asian advertising agency in the country. Her accolades include the Mahatma Gandhi Samman and the Shakti Award for women’s empowerment.

The AAPI Commission, chaired by Gaurav Vasisht, aims to address challenges faced by the AAPI community, including economic growth, education, health, and combating hate crimes. The initiative is supported by Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Indian American legislator in New York, and Senator Jeremy Cooney, a co-sponsor of the legislation.

Governor Kathy Hochul, who signed the AAPI Commission Bill into law on February 7, 2024, emphasized the importance of the Commission in fostering inclusivity and understanding. The state has allocated $35 million to combat hate crimes and $30 million to support local AAPI organizations.

This milestone reflects the growing influence of Asian Americans, the fastest-growing ethnic community in the U.S., and underscores the state's commitment to diversity and equality.
