US Visa Appointment Waiting Time to Decrease: New Guidelines Set for January 1, 2025

US Visa Appointment Update: A significant change has been announced to address long waiting times for US visa interviews, providing relief to Indian applicants.

A new development brings good news for Indians planning to travel to the United States. In an effort to reduce the extended waiting periods for US visa interview appointments, the US Embassy in India has decided to implement new rules for scheduling and rescheduling appointments. Starting January 1, 2025, applicants will be allowed to reschedule a one-time appointment without incurring additional fees.

As per the US Embassy’s statement, the updated regulations aim to ensure a more transparent process for scheduling visa interviews and minimize waiting times. “Visa interview appointments will be made available in a clear and transparent manner. We are introducing changes with the goal of reducing wait times. These new rules will be effective from January 1, 2025. Applicants for non-immigrant visas will be able to schedule an initial interview at their preferred location. If needed, they can reschedule the appointment once without any extra charges. However, if the appointment is missed or rescheduled a second time, a new appointment must be booked, and the application fee will be applicable once again,” the statement from the embassy explained.

The embassy further stated that this decision is intended to streamline the appointment process and speed up the system. Applicants are encouraged to attend their interviews at the designated times. Over the past few years, Indian citizens have faced long delays, with waiting times for US visa appointments stretching for months. Currently, applicants for B1/B2 visitor visas in Mumbai face a wait of 438 days, while Hyderabad applicants experience a wait of 429 days. Student visa applicants in Hyderabad are required to wait for 115 days.

In addition, the US has already made it easier to switch from an F-1 student visa to an H-1B visa. The processing of H-1B visa applications, which have already been approved, will be expedited. These new rules are scheduled to take effect on January 17, 2025.
