California, USA: Reena Rao, the co-founder and President of the Cupertino Bhubaneswar Sister City Initiative (CBSCI), will be attending the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to January 10, 2025.
This prestigious event, organized by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, celebrates the achievements of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and their contributions globally.
"As I prepare for my participation in Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, I want to emphasize the vital role that government and corporate partnerships play in supporting sister city programs. These initiatives are key to fostering cultural exchange and tourism, strengthening the grassroots relationship between India and the United States," Rao shared.
Rao’s recent visit to Bhubaneswar, accompanied by Cupertino Mayor Sheila Mohan, focused on bolstering ties between the two cities. The discussion, held with Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das, explored opportunities for collaboration in technology, tourism, and cultural exchange. As Cupertino is a hub for the tech industry, particularly being home to Apple’s headquarters, both mayors stressed how Odisha could benefit from enhanced cooperation in these sectors.
"Our organization's mission has always been to build stronger connections between Cupertino and Bhubaneswar since the cities officially became sister cities through an MOU in 2012," Rao said.
Cupertino and Bhubaneswar became sister cities in 2012 when former Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong and Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena signed the memorandum.
Cupertino Bhubaneswar Sister City Initiative
The initiative promotes cultural exchange through programs that highlight each city’s unique heritage. This includes educational exchanges, cultural arts programs, and leadership development for youth. The Youth Leadership Summit is one such initiative, offering young participants opportunities to gain leadership and professional skills. Additionally, Cupertino hosts several community events, including the Konark Festival and Odisha Day celebrations, while also promoting tourism and local crafts.
"Our initiative stands out due to its inclusive approach, encouraging participation from both the Indian and American communities, not limited to the Odia diaspora alone," Rao noted. This inclusive approach has contributed to the growth of friendly and cooperative relations between the citizens of both cities.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention 2025
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will revolve around the theme "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat." This aligns with India's vision for becoming a developed nation by 2047, the centenary of its independence. The event will feature five plenary sessions covering topics such as diaspora culture, youth leadership, sustainable development, and the role of women in global transformation.
Rao expressed her excitement about attending these sessions and hopes to forge new relationships that will further enhance the Cupertino-Bhubaneswar initiative. Among the plenary sessions are discussions on diaspora contributions to culture, global leadership, and sustainable development, as well as celebrating women's leadership in the diaspora.
Promoting Cultural Exchange through Tourism
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas delegates will also explore Odisha’s commitment to sustainable tourism and community engagement. Rao is particularly excited about visiting historic sites such as the Dhauli Shanti Stupa, the Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves, and the Buddhist Diamond Triangle Circuit. The Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will also offer a glimpse into the state’s architectural and cultural richness.
This event will provide a unique opportunity for global cultural exchange, fostering peace and mutual understanding among attendees.
