Indonesia Slams Israeli Assault on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

JAKARTA - On October 11, Indonesia confirmed that two of its UN peacekeepers were injured by Israeli gunfire in Lebanon, labeling the incident as a breach of international law.

According to UN peacekeepers, Israeli forces fired at their headquarters in southern Lebanon on October 10, resulting in injuries to two members of the Blue Helmets, which led to widespread condemnation.

Israel stated that the attack was aimed at Hezbollah militants situated near UN positions, occurring after the peacekeeping mission declined Israeli requests to “relocate” from certain areas.

"In the incident involving the tower in Nakura, two personnel, both from Indonesia, were injured," reported Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. She noted that the peacekeepers sustained minor injuries and are currently hospitalized for further observation.

"Indonesia strongly condemns this attack," she asserted. "Targeting UN personnel and facilities constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law."

Marsudi urged all parties to uphold respect for UN territory at all times and under all conditions. Indonesia, a firm critic of Israel and a supporter of Palestine, has 1,232 personnel currently deployed with the UN mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL.
