Beijing, China: During the BRICS Summit held in October 2024 in Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized to Chinese President Xi Jinping that India-China relations must be built on a foundation of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.
Beijing: Efforts to improve relations between India and China have seen progress at multiple levels since the pivotal meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in Kazan last year, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Speaking during his meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing on Monday, Wang noted that the momentum for enhancing ties has significantly accelerated.
Following the discussions, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement affirming that both nations have "earnestly implemented the important consensus" established during the leaders’ dialogue.
"The two sides should seize the moment, meet each other halfway, explore tangible steps forward, and prioritize mutual understanding, support, and cooperation over suspicion, distancing, and conflict," the Chinese statement urged.
The ministry further emphasized that improving relations between the two countries aligns with their fundamental interests, benefits the people of both nations, and contributes to peace, stability, and development in Asia and globally. It also noted that the cooperation of these two ancient civilizations can significantly aid the aspirations of countries in the Global South.
During the BRICS Summit sidelines meeting, PM Modi reiterated the importance of three key principles—mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity—for restoring India-China ties to a positive and sustainable trajectory.
"We are encouraged by the consensus achieved on resolving border issues that have arisen over the past four years. Peace and stability along the border must remain a priority. Our relationship must be grounded in mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity," said PM Modi after the bilateral engagement, which marked the first high-level delegation meeting between the two nations in nearly five years.
