3,000 Vehicle Cargo Ship Sinks In Pacific Weeks After Blaze

A Mexico-bound cargo ship, Morning Midas, sank in the North Pacific Ocean on June 23 after a fire and severe weather caused water to flood the vessel, according to Zodiac Maritime.

The vessel, loaded with nearly 3,000 vehicles—including 800 electric models—caught fire on June 3 while sailing about 300 miles off Alaska’s coast. All 22 crew members were safely evacuated.

It eventually sank to a depth of 5,000 meters, around 360 nautical miles from the nearest land. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that no oil spill or marine pollution occurred following the sinking.
