A massive tremor shook the Drake Passage near South America on Thursday, rattling the remote region between Cape Horn and Antarctica.
The USGS first recorded the tremor as an 8.0 but later corrected its strength to 7.5 after detailed seismic analysis.
Despite the strength, the US Tsunami Warning System issued no alert, though Chile declared a tsunami warning.
The quake, recorded at a depth of 10.8 km, was also measured at 7.1 by Germany’s research centre.
India’s NCS noted tremors at 07:46 am IST. Located at the junction of the South American and Antarctic plates, the area is prone to quakes.
No major damage or casualties have been reported, though locals panicked.
