A major tragedy was averted in the US after an American Airlines flight caught fire mid-air shortly after takeoff. The Airbus A321, en route from Las Vegas to Charlotte, made an emergency landing back in Las Vegas. All 153 passengers and six crew members were safe.
Though the airline claimed no engine fire was confirmed, viral videos showed smoke and sparks. Witnesses also reported hearing loud noises. Passengers were later flown to their destination on another flight.
In a separate incident on June 12, an Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing 241 people, including 35 medics and former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani.
