Argentina Flood Disaster: 16 Dead, Several Missing After Heavy Rains

Heavy rains in Argentina have resulted in the death of 16 people, with several others reported missing. According to officials, the eastern coastal city of Bahía Blanca has been severely impacted. The rains, which began two days ago, caused massive flooding, leading to several people being swept away. Authorities immediately responded, evacuating 1,450 people to safer locations from Bahía Blanca, which is located south of the capital, Buenos Aires.

In the past two days, Bahía Blanca has recorded around 300 millimeters of rainfall, significantly higher than its usual monthly average of 129 millimeters. Officials initially reported 10 deaths on Friday, but by Sunday, the number had risen to 16. The mayor's office in Bahía Blanca has warned that more casualties are possible. The city, located approximately 600 kilometers from Buenos Aires, has a population of about 350,000 people.

Among the victims, five individuals were found dead inside a car submerged in floodwaters. Provincial Security Minister Javier Alonso stated that within just eight hours on Friday morning, around 400 millimeters of rain had fallen—equivalent to the city's average annual rainfall. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and Defense Minister Luis Petri attempted to visit the affected areas, but delays in their visit led to frustration among local residents. Rescue operations are still underway to locate the missing individuals.
