FIA Chicago Hosts Sewa Diwali Food Drive for Families

Chicago, Illinois, USA: The yearly initiative unites community organisations throughout the U.S. to collect and distribute food donations during the Diwali festival.

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago collaborated with Sewa Diwali to organise a community food drive supporting families in need.

The event, held at Patel Brothers in Schaumburg, centred on collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks and shelters. The initiative highlighted the Indian American community’s commitment to Seva—selfless service—particularly during the festive season.

FIA members, volunteers, and community supporters actively participated in the drive. “It feels wonderful to contribute and bring happiness by providing meals to those in need,” said Hemant Patel, president of FIA Chicago, while expressing gratitude to donors, participants, and supporters.

Patel also recognised the contributions of FIA executives Amar Upadhyay and vice president Joy (Dipen) Shah, who generously sponsored food donations on behalf of the organisation. “Through efforts like these, we continue to reflect the true spirit of Diwali—sharing light, love, and compassion,” he added.

Since its launch in 2018, the Sewa Diwali Food Drive has been a nationwide volunteer initiative led by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), in partnership with several Dharmic cultural and faith-based organisations, including Hindu, Jain, and Sikh groups.

The campaign now spans more than 200 cities across the United States, collectively donating over 1.5 million pounds of food to local pantries and community centres.
