Washington: In 2024, the number of Indian students in the United States rose by 11.8%. According to the latest annual report released by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), there are currently 422,335 Indian students in the U.S.
This constitutes 27% of the total number of international students in the U.S. Notably, for the first time in the past 15 years, India has surpassed China (which holds 20%) to take the top spot. Indian students also account for the highest proportion (48%) enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses. China stands second with 20.4%. Interestingly, the number of Chinese students declined by 0.25% compared to 2023.
Asian Countries Continue to Dominate
Asian countries continue to dominate among international students in the U.S. Out of the total 1.58 million foreign students, 71.7% — that is, 1,134,953 students — are from Asian nations, according to the report.
