Ottawa, Canada: An Indian-origin professional, Gurvinder Singh, said he faced a wave of hateful comments after sharing on TikTok that he was laid off from his job in Canada. Several users told him to work at Tim Hortons or return to India. Singh responded firmly, saying he has no plans to leave the country.
In a follow-up video, Singh introduced himself and said he has the skills needed to secure another role in his field within Canada, adding that he does not need to take up work outside his profession. He explained that he shared the layoff news on TikTok and was surprised by the backlash that followed.
Singh also addressed questions about his employment status, saying he received one week of severance and has already applied for employment insurance benefits.
Responding to the hostile remarks, Singh said he was puzzled by the anger directed at a specific community. He reiterated his intention to stay in Canada and said he remains confident about finding a suitable opportunity in his professional domain.
The video has drawn attention amid rising reports of racially motivated harassment against people of Indian origin in Canada and the United States, often driven by claims that immigrants are taking local jobs. While Tim Hortons is frequently mentioned in such debates, the company has stated that over 95 percent of its workforce is hired locally and does not release employee data by nationality or ethnicity.
