Indian-Origin UNO Student Wins 2025 Leadership Award for Impact

Omaha, Nebraska, USA: Indian-Origin Student Honoured with UNO’s 2025 Leadership Award

A senior in computer science has been recognised for her efforts in promoting women’s empowerment and digital access in Omaha.

Aditi Rai, an Indian-origin student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), was recently awarded the 2025 Marian Ivers Community Service Leadership Award.

The accolade, celebrating her initiatives to advance women’s leadership and tech-based community engagement, was presented last week during the Women’s Fund of Omaha’s “Lead the Change” luncheon.

Rai, who serves as the student body vice president, has spearheaded multiple programs connecting STEM education with underserved communities. She launched a mentorship initiative that pairs female high school students with technology professionals, organising coding workshops, career guidance sessions, and interactive learning experiences for more than 100 participants.

“Receiving this recognition is a meaningful acknowledgement of my efforts to support and empower others,” Rai shared with the university press. “Inspired by leaders like Marian Ivers, I am committed to creating more opportunities for women to thrive in tech and other fields.”

Beyond mentorship, Rai has worked alongside local nonprofit organisations to enhance digital literacy among immigrant women. Her outreach efforts have helped train over 200 women, equipping them with critical tech skills to improve employability and boost workforce involvement.

The Marian Ivers Award, named after the first executive vice president of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, celebrates her legacy of fostering women’s leadership and civic participation.

Presented annually by UNO’s Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Centre, the award includes a $2,000 grant to support further academic and professional development.
