Indian Parliamentary Delegation Meets Diaspora in NYC, Strengthens Ties

New York City, NY, USA: A delegation from the Indian Parliament interacted with roughly 90 Indian-Americans, including leaders from business, technology, education, and various community organisations in the U.S.

On October 10, a visiting Indian parliamentary team met with members of the Indian diaspora at the Consulate General of India in New York. The discussions highlighted the community’s financial and cultural contributions to India’s growth, as well as their role in strengthening the India–U.S. partnership.

The gathering takes place amid rising tensions between India and the United States, following the Trump administration’s recent decision to impose 50% tariffs on key Indian exports and raise H-1B visa fees. These moves have sparked concerns among Indian businesses and the diaspora community in the U.S.

“Non-Resident Indians are a major asset for our country,” remarked P.P. Chaudhary, BJP Member of Parliament and former Chair of the Standing Committee on External Affairs.

Chaudhary addressed the delegation, which comprised 11 parliamentarians representing various national parties, emphasising the Modi government’s vision of a ‘Developed India 2047’.

During the session, the delegation engaged with around 90 Indian-Americans, many of whom are active in business, technology, academia, and community initiatives. While participants welcomed the dialogue, several raised challenges they face abroad, such as difficulties in property transactions in India.

Vivek Tankha, Congress MP and delegation member, recognised the significant impact of Indian-Americans in both business and political arenas, describing the meeting as “an important opportunity to connect with the diaspora.”

The event also saw the participation of New Jersey State Senators Raj Mukherji and Vin Gopal, both of Indian descent, who expressed similar views on the importance of diaspora engagement.

This visit forms part of the delegation’s wider outreach in the U.S., aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations through parliamentary and grassroots-level interactions.

However, the Indian government has not yet succeeded in negotiating a reversal of Trump’s tariffs or the increased visa fees, which are expected to affect the Indian economy in the coming months.
