Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: “I’m Indian but deeply ashamed today”: Woman in Canada says her home caught fire due to Diwali fireworks — “This is not culture.”
Two homes in Edmonton, Canada, were severely damaged on Monday night after catching fire from fireworks lit during a Diwali celebration, according to a statement by Edmonton Police. Authorities confirmed that three men have been charged with arson in connection with the incident. In a strong message, police urged residents: “Light up your home, not your neighbour’s roof.”
The fire incident has stirred an intense debate within the Mill Woods community’s Facebook group, with several Indian residents expressing frustration and disappointment over the careless celebration.
One of the affected residents, Teena Andrews, who is originally from India, said her home was among the two that caught fire. Sharing her distress, Andrews described the experience as “traumatic,” adding that she and her husband were unable to sleep and remained in shock. She emphasised that since most houses in the area are made of wood, setting off fireworks nearby is extremely unsafe.
“My husband and I haven’t slept since it happened. We’re traumatised and still can’t believe it. And yes, I’m Indian, but today I feel totally ashamed. This is not culture — it’s recklessness and ignorance,” she wrote on Facebook.
Andrews questioned the purpose of celebrating Diwali in such a destructive manner, asking,
“What’s the point of celebrating a festival of light if your fireworks end up burning someone else’s home? Where’s the joy in that? If people can’t celebrate responsibly, they shouldn’t celebrate at all.”
No Permit, No Fireworks
Edmonton Police confirmed that the blaze originated from fireworks ignited in a neighbouring backyard during Diwali festivities. Officers said the damage could have been far worse and reminded residents that fireworks within city limits require a mandatory permit.
“No permit. No fireworks,” the police statement reiterated, along with the message: “Light up your home, not your neighbour’s roof.”
Authorities have not yet revealed the names of the three men charged in the case.
Fireworks Not Part of Diwali Tradition, Say Residents

In the community discussion, another Indian resident, Mohit Vig, stressed that fireworks are not a traditional element of Diwali.
“I am an Indian and a proud follower of Sanatan Dharma. Diwali is our most sacred festival, but let’s be clear — bursting fireworks has nothing to do with the essence of Diwali,” he commented.
