New York City, NY, USA: New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar highlighted the Indian American fashion label Soara during New York Fashion Week on September 10.
As the first Indian American woman elected to the state legislature, Rajkumar celebrated her heritage while participating in Style Across the Aisle, a platform that unites New York’s civic and cultural figures to spotlight rising designers.
“Every day I walk the streets of New York, but this week I took that stride onto a much larger runway,” Rajkumar remarked. “Fashion allows us to express our identity and confidence, and in public service, I strive to give every New Yorker the chance to stand tall with pride. My vision is a state where everyone has a runway of opportunity.”
Soara, founded in 2024 by Surya Garg and Madhu Powar, combines South Asian cultural influences with sustainable practices and traditional Indian craftsmanship. The brand prioritizes natural textiles, ethical production methods, and a direct-to-consumer approach. Garg, like Rajkumar, is the child of Indian American immigrants, reinforcing the cultural resonance of the collection showcased at the event.
Style Across the Aisle has quickly become a highlight of Fashion Week, featuring designers from across New York City and models drawn from the political landscape. This year’s edition raised over $75,000 for charity while celebrating small businesses, cultural diversity, and community engagement.
