LPU Bans Coca-Cola, Pepsi in Protest Against Trump Tariffs

Birmingham, USA: Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab has made a bold move in response to the steep import tariffs imposed on India by US President Donald Trump. The university announced an immediate ban on American soft drink brands like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo across its campus. LPU stated that this step is part of their initiative called “Swadeshi 2.0”, aimed at promoting indigenous alternatives. The US had first levied a 25% duty on Indian goods, which was later raised to 50%, effective from August 27. This decision was officially confirmed by Lovely Professional University.

Punjab MP Ashok Mittal, while addressing a gathering at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, compared this decision to the historic Swadeshi movement of 1905. He recalled how Indians had once boycotted British products and emphasized that the same spirit is needed today. Dr. Mittal remarked that the United States had underestimated India’s determination, stressing that the country is ready to respond strongly. He also pointed out that while the US continues to import oil from Russia, it unfairly criticizes India for doing the same to safeguard its energy needs.

According to him, if India is purchasing crude oil from Russia for its security, it is unjust for the US to single out India with restrictions. He highlighted that the boycott has already been implemented at LPU and is a clear message to Washington. Mittal further warned that if the US persists with tariff hikes, India will not remain silent. American companies currently earn around ₹6.5 lakh crore annually from the Indian market, but renewed sanctions and trade restrictions could result in strong pushback and boycotts within the country.

Fun Fact: The Origins of Pepsi

Pepsi does not have a traditional “full form.” The name was created by its inventor, Caleb Bradham, inspired by “pepsin”, a digestive enzyme, and “cola”, which refers to kola nuts. Interestingly, the beverage was first introduced in 1898 as “Brad’s Drink”, before being renamed Pepsi-Cola to highlight its digestive qualities. By 1961, the name was simplified to just Pepsi.

Where Was Pepsi Created?

Pepsi was originally formulated by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in the town of New Bern, North Carolina, during the 1890s. From his drugstore, he experimented with the drink that eventually became a global brand.
