Washington, D.C., USA:  Indian-American tech leader Mangala Kuppa has been appointed CIO of the U.S. Department of Labor, bringing over 25 years of experience in IT, AI, and digital transformation leadership.

The U.S. Department of Labor has officially appointed Indian-American technology leader Mangala Kuppa as its Chief Information Officer (CIO), the agency announced on March 30.

Kuppa, who had been serving as Acting CIO, now assumes the role on a permanent basis. In her new position, she will oversee the Department’s extensive IT infrastructure, responsible for developing, maintaining, and securing technology systems and data across 27 agencies to support mission-critical operations.

With over 25 years of experience spanning both public and private sectors, Kuppa joined the Department of Labor in 2010. Since then, she has held several key leadership roles, including Chief Technology Officer, Chief AI Officer, and Director of Technology, Innovation, and Engineering.

During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in shaping the Department’s artificial intelligence strategy, establishing its enterprise data platform, and driving innovation through the adoption of low-code and no-code technologies.

As CIO, she will also oversee the Department’s IT portfolio, ensuring alignment with the President’s Management Agenda. Her focus areas include strengthening cybersecurity resilience, advancing digital transformation, modernizing legacy systems, and accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Prior to her tenure at the Department of Labor, Kuppa spent over a decade at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, where she held several leadership roles including Acting Director, Division Chief, and Project Manager. Earlier in her career, she worked in the private sector for nearly 15 years.

Originally from Andhra Pradesh, India, Kuppa holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from SNDT Women's University and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Andhra University.
