Washington: US President Donald Trump said he is ready for “second stage” sanctions on Russia, tightening economic pressure as the Ukraine war drags on.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned that countries continuing to purchase Russian oil could face additional trade penalties.
India, one of the biggest buyers of Russian crude, already faces a 50% US tariff. Experts say more penalties could strain ties despite Trump and Modi’s recent show of partnership.
Bessent called sanctions a race between Ukraine’s resilience and Russia’s economy, stressing EU coordination. He also voiced confidence that Trump’s tariff policies will survive legal challenges.
The warning came as Russia intensified strikes on Kyiv, prompting calls for stronger Western action.
