Nepal Political Turmoil: Former King Gyanendra Shah Arrest Under Consideration?

Recently, violent clashes broke out between royalist supporters and security forces in various parts of Kathmandu. Protesters attempted to break barricades, prompting security forces to respond with tear gas. Amid the chaos, demonstrators set fire to a commercial complex, a major political party’s headquarters, and a media house building. Over 12 police officers were injured in these incidents.

In response to the violence, Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli convened an emergency cabinet meeting. Reports suggest that the government is considering holding former King Gyanendra Shah responsible for the unrest and may move forward with his arrest. A cabinet minister revealed that discussions are underway to assess security officials’ opinions and evaluate the possible consequences. Due to the escalating violence, Tribhuvan International Airport was temporarily shut down.

Nepal abolished its monarchy in 2008 and established a secular, federal, democratic republic. However, in recent years, calls for the restoration of the monarchy have intensified due to political corruption, economic instability, and frequent government changes. On February 19, during Democracy Day, former King Gyanendra Shah sought public support, further fueling the movement. Since 2008, Nepal has witnessed 13 government changes, yet political stability remains elusive.
