Orem, Utah, USA: The tragic incident involving conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has reignited serious concerns about political aggression across the United States.
Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, strongly denounced the attack, labeling it a “national nightmare.” She appealed to Americans to reject hostility, avoid division, and defend the principle of free speech.
In a statement released on September 15, Haley wrote:
“The week of September 11th always carries deep weight for Americans. This year, that heaviness grew even stronger. A young man was openly sharing his ideas about the opportunities and challenges our nation faces. What should have been a proud moment of free expression on a university campus instead became a devastating nightmare.”
Haley commended Kirk for encouraging thoughtful discussions, even on difficult and polarizing issues. She noted that his work was never about promoting hostility or hatred, but about sparking critical thinking among young Americans and inspiring them to engage in debates that matter for the nation’s future.
She added, “In just a single instant, someone stripped him of his Constitutional right to free speech—not by responding with words, but by silencing him through force. That truth should shake every American deeply.”
The former South Carolina governor emphasized that the incident highlights the rising threat of intolerance toward differing opinions. Reflecting on her time as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Haley cautioned that societies that disregard life and liberty often descend into chaos. “I never thought we would see this in America. Our nation must remain a beacon of democracy and freedom,” she said.
Haley further urged citizens not to meet hostility with more division, but instead to strengthen bonds of unity and faith. “Division is tearing this country apart, not making us stronger. Enemies of America take joy in exploiting our differences. We must never resort to violence, and anyone glorifying such acts should face clear consequences,” she warned.
Offering her condolences, Haley asked the public to keep Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children in their prayers. She called for “prayers for strength and peace during the difficult days ahead.”
Charlie Kirk, 31, co-founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, lost his life on September 10 while speaking to a large audience at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, during the opening stop of his “American Comeback Tour.” The gunfire struck him in the neck from a rooftop more than 100 yards away.
Approximately 3,000 people were present at the event. Kirk was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced deceased. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson two days afterward, citing DNA evidence that linked him to a rifle and other items recovered at the scene. Investigators also reported that Robinson had expressed intentions to harm Kirk.
