Los Angeles, California, USA: After Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani made headlines in New York’s mayoral race, another leader with Indian roots is drawing attention on the West Coast. Nithya Raman has officially entered the 2026 mayoral race in Los Angeles, positioning herself as a key challenger to incumbent mayor Karen Bass.

Currently serving as a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing District 4, Raman has emerged as a prominent voice in city politics. Her campaign is centered on addressing Los Angeles’ escalating housing crisis and homelessness issues — two of the most pressing challenges facing the city.

Born in Kerala, India, Raman experienced early hardship while living in Delhi and Chennai, where access to basic necessities such as water, sanitation, and stable housing was limited. Her family later emigrated to the United States when she was six years old.

The 44-year-old leader holds a degree in political theory from Harvard University and a master’s degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before entering electoral politics, she worked as an urban planner, focusing on equitable housing and sustainable city development.

In 2020, Raman was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, becoming the first South Asian woman to hold the position. Her tenure has been marked by advocacy for affordable housing, climate action, and infrastructure improvements.

As she challenges Mayor Karen Bass, Raman has emphasized that Los Angeles stands at a critical juncture requiring bold leadership and structural reform. Her policy priorities include expanding affordable housing, tackling homelessness, and implementing climate-resilient urban planning.

Raman has also been recognized by environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club for her work on climate-related initiatives. Her candidacy is expected to intensify political debate in California’s largest city as the 2026 mayoral election approaches.
