Powerful 7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits the Philippines; Tsunami Alert Issued

Manay, Mindanao, Philippines: A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Philippines on Friday, prompting tsunami warnings and evacuation advisories across several coastal regions, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs reported that the offshore quake originated near the waters of Manay town in Davao Oriental, located in Mindanao, at a depth of around 10 kilometres. The agency cautioned that aftershocks and potential structural damage could follow the initial tremor.

Authorities urged residents in low-lying areas of the central and southern Philippines to move to elevated locations or relocate further inland as a safety measure.

So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or major destruction.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii also issued an alert, warning that hazardous waves could affect coastal zones within a 300-kilometre (186-mile) radius from the epicentre.

Tsunami waves as high as three meters were forecast along certain Philippine coastlines, while smaller waves could reach Indonesia and Palau.

In Davao Oriental, Governor Edwin Jubahib told local media that the tremor caused panic among residents.

“Some buildings have reportedly sustained damage,” he said, describing the quake as “extremely strong.”

Videos shared on social media showed scenes of fear and confusion as the ground shook.

One clip from Tagum City Davao Hospital depicted patients and staff fleeing the facility in alarm. Another video, believed to be from a fish-rearing shop, captured water in tanks and containers sloshing violently during the quake.

As a precautionary step, Indonesia also issued a tsunami warning for its northern Sulawesi and Papua regions, advising residents of potential waves up to 50 centimetres along coastal zones.

This latest quake comes just two weeks after the Philippines suffered its deadliest earthquake in more than ten years, a 6.9-magnitude tremor that struck offshore near Cebu, claiming at least 72 lives.
