San Diego Boat Capsize: 3 Dead, Indian Children Among 9 Missing

A small boat capsized off San Diego’s coast early Monday, leaving 3 dead, 4 injured, and 9 missing — including 2 Indian children. The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has confirmed that their parents are receiving treatment in a hospital.

The 12-foot panga-style boat flipped in high surf near Torrey Pines State Beach around 6:30 am. Authorities suspect the passengers were migrants, not tourists, though immigration status isn’t confirmed. Pangas are open boats typically used for fishing, but frequently employed by smugglers.

Search and rescue operations are being led by the US Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and local authorities. Seventeen life jackets have been found, but the total number of people onboard remains uncertain.

In 2023, a similar smuggling tragedy killed eight near the same coast. Officials fear this could become another mass casualty incident.
