Sudan Landslide Kills Nearly 200 Children In Darfur

A deadly landslide in Darfur over the weekend killed up to 200 children, with more than 1,000 feared dead. Save the Children reported 150 survivors, including 40 children, receiving medical care.

Francesco Lanino of Save the Children called it “one of Sudan’s worst natural disasters,” worsening the ongoing civil war crisis that has killed over 40,000 and displaced 12 million.

Authorities recovered 375 bodies in Tarasin village, where heavy rains triggered the August 31 landslide, destroying homes, schools, and health facilities.

The disaster hit in two waves, trapping villagers and rescuers. Thousands remain missing, and ongoing rain raises fears of more landslides.

Residents have moved to nearby villages but still lack food, water, medical care, and shelter. Aid groups are providing relief and helping with relocation.
