Donald Trump described India’s alleged halt in Russian oil imports as a “constructive gesture,” amid growing tensions over international trade alignments.
His remarks followed Washington’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods and warnings over New Delhi’s ongoing arms and oil trade with Moscow.
Trump told ANI he had heard India stopped buying Russian oil but wasn’t certain. Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said energy purchases are guided by market dynamics and national interest, denying knowledge of any formal halt.
Reports suggest Indian state-run refiners recently paused Russian crude orders due to reduced price benefits and US pressure. India, ranked third globally in oil imports, continues to balance strategic energy interests with historic diplomatic bonds, especially in its dealings with Russia.
Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier criticized India for continuing oil imports from Russia despite sanctions related to the Ukraine war.
