Trump slams New York governor for endorsing Mamdani in mayoral race

New York City, NY, USA:  Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sept. 15 criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for throwing her support behind Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic mayoral candidate, calling him a “Liddle’ Communist” in a social media post.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old member of the New York State Assembly and a proud socialist, shook the political establishment in June when he won the Democratic primary for New York City’s mayoral race. His victory was seen as a major upset within the party.

Currently, Mamdani holds a commanding lead in polls ahead of the November 4 election, which will determine the next mayor of the nation’s largest city.

“This is a shocking and terrible step for New York City," Trump wrote online. “How could something like this happen? Washington will be keeping a close eye on this matter."

Mamdani has built his campaign around reducing inequality in New York City and expanding affordable housing options for low-income families.

On Sept. 14, Governor Hochul formally endorsed Mamdani, choosing him over Andrew Cuomo, the former governor and influential political figure. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is seeking reelection as an independent.

“My biggest priority has always been affordability, and that is also Mr. Mamdani’s top concern," Hochul said in her endorsement statement. “During my time as governor, I’ve lowered taxes for middle-class families and made school meals free for every student. But there is still more work to be done."

She also aimed her remarks at Trump, saying:

“Given the harmful and reckless decisions coming out of Washington, I need to be sure that the next mayor will not give in to President Trump’s agenda."
