Ukrainian Immigrants Shocked by Mistaken U.S. Deportation Email

Since Donald Trump became the President of the United States, his administration has taken aggressive steps on immigration. It has already cracked down on illegal immigrants and is deporting them. Now, the U.S. government is also targeting those who are in the country on temporary immigration status. In this context, a recent email sent to Ukrainian citizens living in the U.S. created panic. The message asked them to leave the country within seven days. However, officials later clarified that the message was sent by mistake, bringing some relief to those affected.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. allowed temporary humanitarian parole for Ukrainian citizens to stay in the country. But recently, many of them received a shocking message: “Your parole is being cancelled. Do not attempt to stay in the U.S. You must leave within seven days. If not, the federal government will take action, and legal consequences will follow. You will be deported.” This triggered fear and anxiety among the Ukrainian community.

Later, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security clarified that the message was sent in error. They confirmed that the humanitarian parole status for Ukrainians had not been canceled, and fresh emails were sent to correct the error. No change was made to their temporary residency status. In contrast, the DHS recently announced the cancellation of legal protection for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, affecting around 532,000 people who arrived after October 2022. There were also previous reports that the Trump administration planned to cancel the temporary status of 240,000 Ukrainians, which made this mistaken message even more alarming.
