Washington: The U.S. is facing backlash from India and other countries over allegations of deporting illegal migrants in a humiliating manner by shackling them. In India, the opposition Congress party has strongly criticized this action, accusing the U.S. of sending deported migrants, including Indians, with their hands and legs chained.
Adding to the controversy, the White House recently posted a 41-minute video on social media showing illegal migrants being shackled before boarding a deportation flight. The video also shows police preparing chains for the migrants. However, the faces of those boarding the plane were not visible in the footage.Congress has also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that he failed to address this issue during his recent U.S. visit. Earlier, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar tried to downplay the controversy, stating that women and children were not being shackled.
