Austin, Texas, USA: Over the years, this Texas-based non-profit has successfully raised more than $3.6 million and delivered 24,460,710 meals to those facing food insecurity.
Hunger Mitao, a community-focused organisation operating in Texas, has revitalised its food distribution program, now providing over 1 million meals each month.
By partnering with the Feeding America network of food banks, HungerMitao aims to increase awareness about hunger in the United States, engage local communities, and channel the support and contributions of the Indian American community toward fighting hunger.
Led by volunteers, the organisation focuses on raising awareness about hunger, coordinating volunteers, organising food drives, and securing essential funding to strengthen its grassroots initiatives.
Each year, HungerMitao distributes aid valued at roughly $500,000, supplying more than 4,250,000 meals to individuals in need. In total, the organisation has raised over $3.6 million and provided 24,460,710 meals to the most vulnerable residents in the region.
The organisation was established by Indian-origin couple Anna and Raj Asava. Their philanthropic journey began by supporting charitable work in India and gradually shifted to addressing urgent local needs, ultimately inspiring the creation of the HungerMitao initiative.
Their dedication to strategic, values-driven giving is evident in their decision to join CFT’s Live Oak Society. Through this planned giving program, they have carefully structured their estate to ensure ongoing support for causes aligned with their family’s principles, even after their lifetime.
Reflecting on this choice, Anna Asava stated, "We wanted to ensure that the Live Oak Society program allows us to leave funds that continue supporting causes that reflect our family’s values."
She further emphasised their philosophy, saying, "We understood that nothing will accompany us after we’re gone, so why not strategically allocate resources for the benefit of the next generation?"
In addition to their ongoing food distribution efforts, the couple encourages others to adopt similar philanthropic practices. October is observed as 'Planned Giving Month,' during which the organisation promotes structured giving so that resources continue to assist those in need, even beyond the donor’s lifetime.
